Berkley Baits Buying Guide

When it comes to Berkley baits and lures, the difference is in the science. Berkley invests heavily in scent dispersion, material innovation, and underwater testing, giving anglers a real edge.

Our team at Angling Sports has seen firsthand how these perform across Ontario waters. Here’s how to choose the right option:

  • PowerBait vs Gulp
    • PowerBait: Ideal for longer presentations. Fish hold on longer, perfect for beginners and finesse anglers.
    • Gulp: Water-based scent dispersion. Best for aggressive species like walleye and pike in moving water.
  • Flicker Shad for Trolling
    • One of the most reliable trolling lures for walleye.
    • Consistent dive depth and tight wobble, deadly on pressured fish.
  • Soft Plastics vs Hard Baits
    • Soft plastics (Gulp, PowerBait): More scent, better for tough bites.
    • Hard baits (Flicker Shad): Cover water fast and trigger reaction strikes.

We recommend matching your bait to water temperature and fish mood. Opt for subtle presentations in cold water and aggressive profiles in warmer conditions.

Angling Sports Pro Tip: When fish are pressured, switch to Gulp minnows on a light jig head. The scent trail alone can turn follows into bites.

Berkley Fishing Baits & Lures FAQs

Product information

What makes Berkley PowerBait so effective?

PowerBait is engineered to replicate the scent and taste of real forage, but what sets it apart is how long fish hold onto it, up to 18x longer than traditional soft plastics. This gives anglers more time to detect subtle bites and set the hook properly. It’s especially effective for finesse techniques, beginners, and pressured fish, where extra time can make all the difference.

When should I use Berkley Gulp instead of PowerBait?

Use Gulp when you need to actively attract fish rather than just trigger a bite. Unlike PowerBait, Gulp disperses scent into the water, creating a scent trail that draws fish in from a distance. It’s ideal for walleye fishing in current, deeper water, or low-visibility conditions, and is a top choice for both open water and ice fishing when fish are spread out.

Is Berkley Flicker Shad good for trolling?

Absolutely. The Flicker Shad is one of the most trusted trolling baits for walleye because of its tight wobble, consistent tracking, and precise dive depth. It allows you to dial in exact zones where fish are holding, whether you’re trolling over flats or along breaklines. It also performs well at a range of speeds, making it a reliable option for covering water and locating active fish

Are Berkley baits good for ice fishing?

Yes, Berkley Gulp and PowerBait are excellent in cold water conditions. Their scent formulas continue to release even in low temperatures, which is critical when fish are less active. Ice anglers commonly use them for perch, crappie, and walleye, often tipping jigs to add scent and increase bite conversion rates.
