Casting rods, also called baitcast rods or baitcaster rods, mount the reel on top of the blank with the guides facing up. That gives you more accuracy with heavier lures and more power behind the hookset, which is why they are the standard choice for bass, pike, musky and walleye anglers fishing heavy cover, big baits or braid. We carry casting rods from St. Croix, Shimano, Daiwa, G. Loomis, Fenwick, Abu Garcia, Megabass and more. New to baitcasters? The guide below covers length, power, action and line pairing.

Casting Rod Buying Guide
Casting Rods vs Spinning Rods: Which Do You Need?
The difference is where the reel sits and how line leaves it.
On a casting rod the reel mounts on top of the blank with the guides facing up. Line comes off a spool that turns as you cast. You get more direct contact with the lure, more power for driving hooks home, and better accuracy once you have built the thumb control. Casting gear handles heavy line and big baits comfortably.
On a spinning rod the reel hangs beneath the blank with the guides facing down. Line peels off a fixed spool, so light lures cast further with less effort and there is no backlash to manage.
Choose a casting rod for lures over roughly 1/4 oz, heavy braid or fluorocarbon, fishing around wood, weeds and docks, or species that need a firm hookset.
Choose a spinning rod for light finesse baits, light line, or if you are new to the sport and want the shorter learning curve.
Most serious anglers carry both. For a first setup targeting Ontario bass or walleye, a medium-heavy casting rod around 7'0" covers more water than any other single rod.
How to Choose a Casting Rod
Length. Shorter rods at 6'6" to 6'10" give you accuracy in tight quarters and under overhanging cover. Longer rods at 7'0" to 7'6" cast further and pick up more line on the hookset. A 7'0" is the most versatile starting point. Musky and swimbait rods run 8'0" and beyond to handle the weight.
Power is how much force it takes to bend the blank, and it should match your lure weight and line. Medium suits crankbaits and smaller presentations. Medium-heavy is the workhorse for jigs, Texas rigs and spinnerbaits. Heavy and extra-heavy handle flipping heavy cover, big swimbaits and musky work.
Action is where the blank bends. Fast and extra-fast actions load near the tip for quick, direct hooksets on single-hook presentations like jigs and worms. Moderate actions bend further down and keep treble-hooked fish pinned, which suits crankbaits and topwater.
Match the reel. Gear ratio sets retrieve speed. Around 6:1 suits moving baits like spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Around 7:1 is a solid all-rounder. 8:1 and faster is for picking up slack quickly when flipping or working topwater.
Match the line. Casting gear handles braid and fluorocarbon well. Check the rated line class printed on the blank and stay inside it.
Casting Rod Brands We Carry
St. Croix brings high-modulus graphite and a strong warranty. Legend Tournament is built for competitive anglers; Bass X sits at the value end without giving up much.
Daiwa covers a wide spread of techniques and price points through the Tatula family, with consistent build quality throughout.
Shimano makes one of the better-balanced rods at its price in the SLX. Ergonomics are a genuine strength across the range.
G. Loomis, Fenwick, Abu Garcia, are among other casting rod brands that round out the range from entry level to specialist.
Building a first baitcasting setup on a budget? Start with our rods under $100.
What You Can Catch on a Casting Rod
Bass: The classic application. Precise placement into cover, and the backbone to pull fish back out of it. Medium-heavy, fast action, 7'0" handles most Ontario largemouth and smallmouth fishing.
Pike: Aggressive strikes and hard runs. Heavier powers handle large lures and the abrasion that comes with toothy fish.
Musky: Heavy casting rods are effectively mandatory. Blades, gliders and rubber baits weigh more than most gear is built for, and hooksets need real power behind them.
Walleye: Usually fished on spinning gear, but casting rods earn their place for heavier jigging, especially in wind or current where direct contact with the bait matters.
Catfish: Casting gear handles the big baits and heavy line these fish demand.
