What are Casting Reels?

Casting reels, also known as baitcasting reels, are perfect for anglers who want more control over the fishing line than other reel types. A casting reel rests on the top of the rod with the spool of line, and the line comes off the spool directly in line with the rod.

Casting reel frames are generally manufactured with graphite or aluminum. Graphite frames are lighter weight and typically less expensive than aluminum, but they won’t withstand heavy weights and rough usage as well as aluminum.

Additionally, ball bearings are an essential component of casting reels, but more bearings do not always mean a better product. Look for quality bearings described as shielded, double-shielded, or sealed for a durable reel.

Are Casting Reels Right for You?

Some new anglers may have trouble controlling the line compared to other options, like spinning reels, but many experienced anglers prefer baitcasters.

A baitcaster reel is ideal for dropping directly into hot spots and crowded areas. The fishing line is dropped when you press the reel’s release button, requiring a more substantial level of coordination for casting than other options. This type of reel can be more expensive than other varieties but typically offers impressive durability, lighter weight, and can catch heavier fish than other options.
